The post-fight press conference that took place
immediately after last night’s Strikeforce main event at the HP Pavilion
in San Jose, California had a strange vibe to it. Everyone there knew
that they had just witnessed something very surprising. The fighter
widely considered to be the best pound-for-pound MMA fighter in the world,
Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko (31-2), had just lost. Not only
that, he had tapped out at just 1:09 of the first round. His opponent,
Fabricio Werdum (14-4-1), was able to secure a triangle choke with an
armbar that forced Fedor to submit. To put it into perspective, Fedor
landed just 5 out of 12 strikes in the match while Werdum did not have a
chance to land any strikes of any sort.
Fedor first came into the media room with his
interpreter and spoke in his very calm and quiet manner. There was an
interesting moment when Fedor was talking to the media and Werdum could be
heard singing and celebrating with his crew right outside the media room.
Check out Fedor, and the rest of the fighters, addressing the media at the
link below.
Next, Scott Smith and Cung Le made their way to the
press conference. Scott Coker, CEO of Strikeforce, compared the two
Le-Smith fights to Gatti-Ward and said there was a possibility that there
would be a third match-up. However, it does not sound like this fight
will happen anytime soon.
Fabricio Werdum was in a great mood and barely needed
the services of Babalu who was serving as a quasi-interpreter. Werdum
was quite witty and brought about chuckles from the media in attendance.
Josh Thomson answered a few questions and elicited a gasp from the
audience when he stated that he had cracked two ribs in the first round.
