NFL Playoffs
Wednesday January 27, 2010
By Barbara Mason 1/25/2010
Bay Area Sports Drive
For
most of the teams in the NFL, the season has come
to an end. There is however a difference from
years past. Instead of fading into the off-season
football fans throughout the nation have lent
their support to a team that has never gone to a
Super Bowl, a team that has gone from no home five
years ago to a team making a place for themselves
in football history. They are a team that has
seen it all.
As I talk to football fans from every corner of
the country, the love and support for the New
Orleans Saints is evident. Their win against
Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings has erased
the years and years of pain and disappointment.
Last year as their season ended it became very
apparent that this team was for real and that they
would be a force to be reckoned with in the 2009
season. When it appeared that they might be
headed for a perfect regular season record, the
Saints stumbled. They stumbled hard and many were
scratching their heads as New Orleans lost the
final three games of the season. Could they pull
it together in time for the playoffs? The chant
that permeated the city and the state was “finish
strong.” That is exactly what this team has done
as they head for Super Bowl XLIV.
For some reason despite living out here in
California, the Saints playing in their first
Super Bowl sounds so right. They have become
America’s team dismissing the team that previously
held that title in lieu of the team America loves
to hate... The world loves the New Orleans Saints
right now regardless of what will take place in
two weeks at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens,
Florida.
The funny thing is that there is a multitude of
sports enthusiasts that are familiar with Drew
Brees, Reggie Bush and that’s where it ends. They
have taken and embraced the entire team whether
they know their names, or their positions or where
they went to college. It just doesn’t matter.
Nothing has taken this city by storm in this
manner since Katrina with a very different
outcome. The joy and pride that has taken this
city to new heights is being celebrated by a
nation right now. It’s a shame that this moment
cannot be frozen in time: the moment that Garrett
Hartley split the uprights with a 40-yard field
goal in overtime for the win and the trip to
Miami.
I say good for you New Orleans Saints! You and
your city have been through the mill both on and
off the field and your time has come. You
suffered indifference at the hands of those who
should have known better. Celebrate and feel the
joy that Katrina robbed you of for so long. Let
this wonderful and long overdue achievement
somehow aid the continued rebuilding of your
glorious city. You have won the hearts of America
and beyond. The world will be watching and
cheering you on in two weeks as you take on the
Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV.

Too Little
Too Late for San Francisco
“He's (Alex Smith) done well whether
he's under center, he's done well
whether he's got two backs in the
backfield.”--Head Coach Mike
Singletary
By
Larry Garcia-BASD 11/23/09
Sunday was not a good start for the
49ers during the first half vs. the
Green Bay Packers in
Lambeau Field. By
the end of the first half, the 49ers
trailed 23-3 and it looked like it was
going to be a blowout and an easy
victory for Green Bay. As the saying
goes, “too little too late”, that was
just the case for San Francisco as
Green Bay stays ahead for the NFC wild
card race.
The 49ers did pick it up a notch and
more during the second half to close
the gap by six, down by 20 and by the
end of the game; the scoreboard
displayed 30-24 Packers. The 49ers
now stand at 4-6 with six games
remaining for the season. Alex Smith
had terrible stats during the first
half collimating (3-for-7 passing for
5 yards). Is Alex Smith the answer
for the 49ers? “We're continuing to
learn his (Alex Smith) strengths.
We're continuing to have him
communicate to us what works for him
and what doesn't. I think, as we go
forward, we have to really look at
what's working for him and what works
for the offense and continue to do
more of those things, “said head coach
Mike Singletary.

Lose or Win
49er Faithful
By Larry Garcia Bay Area Sports Drive
October 18, 2009
Once upon a time, there were two teams
that had both Raider and 49er fans
spoiled. Back when the Silver & Black
collimated three Super Bowls and the
49ers with five Super Bowls. It was
with great coaching-defense-offense,
with names who optimized what the game
was truly about such as Bill Walsh,
Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lot, Rodger Craig,
Kenny Stabler, Bo Jackson, Marcus
Allen, Marv Hubbard, and Art
Shell….that kept fans in a craze. It’s
been a long draught for both sides.
