The Oakland A’s High-Fiving a Comeback
“The guys are feeling a little more
confident about themselves. I like what I’m seeing.” – A’s manager, Bob
Geren
It was a perfect warm and sunny day on Sunday, May 29th, 2011
for the Oakland A’s to defeat the Baltimore Orioles 6-4 at the Oakland
Coliseum ballpark this Memorial Day weekend. The A’s had lost seven of
eleven games since they tied for first place in the American League West
on May 17, 2011 and are now remaining in fourth place with a 3.46 ERA
overall. Today’s win marks their first three-game series sweep of the
season before taking on the New York Yankees.
The Orioles may have taken the lead in the first half of the game,
but the A’s wiped them out in the bottom half. A’s pitcher, Josh
Willingham scored a three-run home-run in the 5th inning
setting the tone to win it. “Seriously, we feel like we’re playing good
baseball right now, and whoever we play, they’re going to have to come
in here and beat us,” he said.
“When he hits them, you don’t even have to look,” said A’s manager
Bob Geren Geren about Willingham. “The sound of the ball off the bat,
you just turn around and start high fiving everybody.”
Good
times are rolling along well for the A’s who also celebrated the return
of All-Star closer Andrew Bailey, his first appearance since September
2010. “I felt really good out there,” said Bailey. “It was nice to get
back and help the team win a ballgame today.”
“The guys are feeling a little more confident about themselves. I
like what I’m seeing,” Geren said letting the bullpen loose with Bailey,
Grant Balfour and Brian Fuentes taking over to close the game.
Geren watched as his team went for a fourth straight game. “We
obviously enjoy this win for an hour or two, but then we go home and
prepare for New York,” he said. Despite their loss against the Yankees
yesterday they surely frustrated the Orioles over the weekend and are
fiercely moving forward.
