Just as the Bay Area fight community was getting revved up for next weekend’s epic clash between Gilroy’s
Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KOs) and Marcos “Chino” Maidana (30-2, 27 KOs), news leaked out last night that the fight has been cancelled.  Robert Guerrero suffered an injury to his left shoulder and arm during sparring on Wednesday which caused him to have to pull out of the fight, just one week before the superfight scheduled for August 27, 2011 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

As a result, the entire fight card, scheduled to be televised by HBO Boxing After Dark, has been cancelled.  Despite the late date, only one fight had been officially announced on the undercard which was the co-feature between heavyweights Seth Mitchell and Mike Mollo.  Guerrero is set to have an MRI done shortly to determine the extent of his injuries.

Guerrero stated, "I'm devastated because I worked my whole life for the opportunity to be a main event on HBO.  It's a major blow to my team and family, but I'll continue to keep strong in my faith in Jesus Christ.  To all my fans, I'll be back and I know God has plans for me to perform in the future."

Maidana was to be the toughest opponent that Guerrero has ever fought and the winner had a very good chance of vaulting onto Ring Magazine’s Pound-for-Pound list.  To illustrate the significance of the fight, HBO’s Boxing After Dark would have been  broadcasting the fight and it was widely expected to be a true war.

Maidana exploded onto the U.S. boxing scene with his knockout win over Victor Ortiz.  In fact, he hurt Ortiz so bad that Ortiz essentially quit in the fight, stating that he did not deserve such treatment and that he had had enough.  This is the same Ortiz that recently beat Andre Berto and will be facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Las Vegas in a big PPV event.
